Car Registration Inspection & Pink Slips

Car Registration Inspection & Pink Slips

If your car is more than 5 years old it requires an eSafety, or registration inspection before you are able to re-register it in NSW. The check involves an All Car Express mechanic inspecting your car to make sure it is safe to drive on public roads.

Once the registration inspection has been carried out our mechanic will either give the car a pass and electronically submit your pink slip to the RMS (Roads and Maritime Services), or will provide you with a list of necessary repairs that must be fixed in order to have the vehicle registered.

If your vehicle is less than 5 years old, you a pink slip is not required and you do not have to book a registration inspection with a licensed mechanic.

NSW reports are valid for 6 months, excluding public passenger vehicles. You must use the report to renew registration within 6 months for the safety check to be valid.

What is checked during a registration inspection?

During your registration inspection our mechanic will go through a list of inspection areas that need to be given a pass or fail verdict. The primary concern when carrying out a car registration inspection is to ensure the car is safe to drive.

The primary areas our mechanic will inspect during the car registration inspection include:

  • Car body condition (looking for rust, or structural issues)
  • Tyre quality and tread depth
  • Seatbelt condition and function
  • Fluid leaks
  • Braking performance
  • Function of headlights, tail lights and indicators
  • Performance of suspension and driveline components
  • Anything else that may make the vehicle unsafe to drive
  • Defectable items (illegal vehicle modifications)

What happens if your car fails it’s registration inspection?

If your car fails the registration inspection a failure notice will be supplied outlining the exact reasons for the failure and what needs to be done to rectify the issues that have been found.

As well as the failure notice we will provide you with a formal quote to have the issues fixed, allowing you to get your car registered and back on the road as soon as possible.

The issues must be rectified within 14 days of the registration inspection. If the 14 day period passes before the issues have been rectified, a new registration inspection must be performed.

What happens after your car passes the registration inspection?

Once your car passes the registration inspection you will be supplied with a pink slip. The pink slip is lodged electronically online with the RMS (Roads and Maritime Services) allowing you to simply attend a Service NSW location, or use the RMS website to re-register your vehicle.
